Artist statement
My experience of working in a small dhaba (restaurant) gave me an opportunity to closely examine the behaviour and sociology of a section of migrated community of poor labourer. For me it was an urgency to support my course of study, but I left the place at a critical juncture when my study at Art College called for more involvement. There is a reason behind migration. It can be natural, political, economic or socio-cultural. Most people from marginal communities migrate due to economic reason. Leaving everything behind in search of a livelihood has an iota of dreams. Sometime these people settle down to steady engagement but most of them carry an unsettle volatility. Vestiges of structure landscapes frozen in the window frame, changing colours of the terrain are some of the forms which keep on informing the core of my visual journey. While constructing the past through a series of images the past gets entangled with the present. The unpleasant become pleasant. The structures attempted may have a strong memory component but has mingled with other to take it to a never understanding.
Because I was a part of them for a long time (when I was working in restaurant), so I revisit closely at their place and try to understand behaviour of their space and objects. Exploring the commonplace through sculptural processes and material has intervened into domains I have been a part of. Objects ranging from spaces like the kitchen, washroom, market, private room architectural spaces etc are like disparate data, irreconcilable in nature, yet put together, forming an irrational juxtaposition. The whole idea lies in the act of experiencing a shift of the considered objects from their ordinary context to the sculptural/artistic periphery. The search is to look into the sculptural, formal, aesthetic possibilities of objects, thereby making attempts to bring about an iconic, sculptural presence in them. Technique plays an important role in my practice because I try to be honest toward the form I am dealing with. Over familiar forms curved out from wood in the realistic format to the best of my ability. This is to portray them in their recognizable form and also to provide them with a status of sculpture with subtle formal innovations
